ITALIAN FIG COOKIES

If you're thinking "fig newton", think again.  Popular throughout southern Italy, especially at Christmas time, and going by the names Cuccidati and Buccelati, these fig cookies originated in Sicily (particularly in Palermo) where they likely received the Arab influence of spices.

With so many versions of this recipe, mine are filled with a generous fragrant mixture of dried Turkish figs, toasted walnuts and almonds blended with orange zest and aromatic spices and sweetened by golden honey, encased in a homemade citrus-infused, flakey pastry dough. A fantastic, dense cookie with a soft center.  Decorated with festive nonpareils (sprinkles), they are the traditional "must-have" for fig lovers!
